Merry Christmas 2009!

It's Emily again, apparently I am going to write the Christmas letter every year. If you noticed, last year's letter wasn't as good as the year before, so obviously this year's will be the worst yet. I haven't even been talking to my family that much lately, so I might just have to make some things up. This past year has been a little weird for my family, because we are all grown up, well, besides Maddy, but she likes to pretend she is grown up, and I think my parents would like her to be grown up, but that's just the vibe I get.

Evidently, my dad has a renewed interest in home improvement. The only reason I know this is because when I get home late at night, sometimes my dad will be up and he'll tell me to go look at something he finished that day, I usually decline, because unlike my dad—I have no interest in home improvement. Although, I was pleasantly surprised when I got home one night and the baseboards were finished (only because we had been without them for five years or so.). Oh, and he is still working at the Water District.

Another reason I don't really talk to my family is because they are never home, well, at least it seems that way. My parents keep going to concerts, which leads me to believe that they are going through a midlife crisis. I'm glad they can experience this part of life together. I think they saw Jason Mraz twice, and half of Peter Frampton, because it was rained out (guess who picked which concert).

More on the midlife crisis, my mom took two road trips with me this year, one to Santa Barbra for the International Film Festival, and the other for her birthday. We drove to Orange County, met up with some friends, and went to Disneyland, which was as magical as ever. She thought about applying for a job this year, perhaps Ann Taylor Loft—you know, for the discount, but that would be too much work. To her credit, she has not forgotten duties appropriate to her age, and baby-sits the grandkids every Tuesday afternoon.

Speaking of the grandkids, Liv is in 2nd grade, and I'm told she is at a superior reading level (as are all with Sandberg blood), and likes to trade books with Madeline (who obviously does not have Sandberg blood, or she would be trading books with me). Mel started preschool, and enjoys it very much, except when her classmate, Henry, cuts her in line. Will is very much into super heroes, and will often associate the color green with The Hulk, or red with Spiderman. Kids have to learn their colors someway I suppose.

From what I read on facebook, Britt and Nate are keeping busy with their kids, and socializing with other people who have kids. Nate just started a new job (as to how he got this job during the economic crisis, I'll never know), but that is exciting for him. Britt is still teaching piano, and keeping her home happy and healthy.

Out of all my family, I talk to my sister Rachel the most, but only over the internet, because she still lives in freaking Dominica (Mom, can I say "freaking" in the Christmas letter? Is that okay? It's not a real swear). She just branded and launched PiNG!, a new cable/broadband/phone company in Dominica. I don't actually know what that means, so I just use a lot of smiley faces when we chat. Rachel tells me Joel is teaching English and Speech at the Jr. College on the island, he is teaching eight classes, and will soon be starting a drama club.
The one family member I wish I spent more time with is my brother, Stephen, because he and Heather put a swimming pool in their backyard earlier this year. They did host a few family barbeques this summer, but not enough in my opinion. Heather has been teaching voice like a mad woman, which I get to hear about because we go to the gym together every morning. She also tells me that Stephen is walking ten miles a day for his job, which allows him to eat things like Twinkies and Slurpees, and at seven o'clock in the morning, while doing crunches, I have nothing but angry feelings toward him.

I know what Madeline has been doing this year, because she blogs about it (if you want to read for yourself go to: www.wheredoesinfinityend.b
logspot.com). Apparently, she stopped going to her Classical Home School co-op this year, and is doing some more self-paced curriculum at home (self-paced just means she is too smart to be with other children). However, before quitting CHD she roped me into an 1800s living history field trip at Sutter's Fort that involved me parting my hair in the middle and taking out my nose ring. I haven't quite forgiven her for this. Since she is not taking Latin anymore, she has been studying Swedish, and has also been taking piano lessons from Brittany.

I guess that just leaves me, geez louise, where to begin. I finished what I thought to be my last semester at DVC in the spring, and intended to be a student at Cal State Fullerton this fall. Upon arrival in August, I attended the first day of classes and realized that I really had no liking of the school, and that I wanted to change my major. So my poor grandparents saw me move in one week, and out the next. I was lucky enough to get my old job back, and I have been working a lot since becoming a college drop out. Never fear, I have applied to San Francisco State and UC Berkeley for this upcoming fall, and will be going back to DVC this January. I also had a man to come home to, and I suppose he is a big reason that I don't talk to my family as much, because if I'm not working you will most likely find me and him at Peet's Coffee or indulging in frozen yogurt, the guilt free dessert. Oh, and every Tuesday we have dinner with my parents and Britt and Nate, so I might be lying when I say that I never talk to my family anymore. It just seems like it sometimes.

I hope that this year has brought you the same happiness and striving to be together, as this year has brought us. Have a very Merry Christmas, and please, if you did not actually make it through this whole letter, let us know so that we don't waste the postage on you next year.

Love,
Emily

Welcome to our Christmas blog.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
So, I was a little apprehensive to write this year's Christmas letter. I mean, people seemed to kinda like last year's, and I know this one is not going to turn out as well. So, please, don't expect much from me.

Oh, and thanks for helping us save the trees.

Maddy

Well, Maddy had a very eventful year. The highlight was probably seeing The Jonas Brothers in concert with her best friend Kaylee. She had so much fun, and talks about it on a regular basis. (P.S. She saw them in July). She did a lot of school, and did it really well. She is still taking Latin, and makes us all feel stupid, all the time.

Uhhmmmm . . . not sure if I'm supposed to say this but . . . she also has a special friend (it seems she is luckier with guys these days than I am, she puts me to shame).

She's getting super old too, and tall. I keep confusing her with my mom because of the height thing. But pretty soon she'll be taller than me, and then I'll just get her confused with Britt, no biggie.

Me

So now it's time to talk about me. First, I've gone crazy this year, literally. No . . . really.

My first crazy act of the year was when I became a vegetarian in April, that's been fun. And no, it's not because of animal rights or anything, I just find that eating something that used to be alive is really gross. Second thing that makes me crazy, I've taken up banjo playing. I. Love. It.

Let's see, I'm still waitressing, and loving it. I just finished the fall semester of my Sophomore year of college, and I'm all registered for next semester, not that I'm thinking about that right now. I've been volunteering at my church's high school youth group, and I LOVE it. The kids are awesome, and it's really fun to give back to the ministry that I was in for so many years.

Back to me being crazy. This fellow up here is Jason Castro from American Idol last season, and he is made of awesome. (I know what you're thinking, what is with the Sandbergs and American Idol contestants?). I am a HUGE fan of this guy, I think his music is beautiful. So when the American Idol concert came around, my mom, Maddy, and I went early to the venue and waited outside to see if the contestants would come and talk to us ("bus stalking" as it is so lovingly called). So I got to meet all of the Idols from last season. SUPER fun. I've been following his career ridiculously closely, and have made a lot of friends on a fan site (see, I told you I went crazy). In fact, last weekend I flew to Garland, TX to see Jason in concert with Patti LaBelle and meet a bunch of the ladies that I have been talking to for the past few months (these ladies are full of win, srsly). It was THE most fun I've ever had. If only I could major in "groupie". . . my life would be amazing.

Oh, and I don't really think I'm crazy for doing any of the above, but I have to pretend I think that so my family doesn't put me in a home.

Stephen and Heather

Stephen and Heather had a great first year of marriage. They are now very proud owners of a home. They have been putting a lot of effort into getting it all "homey" and stuff. It is really nice, and we like going over there to bask in the newness.

Heather is still teaching voice, and has as many students as she can possibly have. Which is super good. She keeps herself busy with that, and the dog. She is teaching piano a little bit too.

Stephen is still working at the Water District, and is reading meters. No, not a meter maid (Lovely Rita anyone?), but a water meter reader. So if you live in his district, keep your yard nice or Stephen will have no respect for you.

Achilles didn't eat any socks this year.

Rachel and Joel

This year Rachel lived in Dominica some more. And we were all jealous.

Joel had a job switch this year. He was working for some lady as her assistant, but that was apparently not so fun. He and his brothers started a company called Staymobile. He fixes phones, and does marketing. Obviously way better.

Rachel is still working at the graphic design company she has been with . . .  forever. She loves it, and gets to have her designs put all over the Caribbean, which helps her ego.

ACTUALLY! Rachel is HOME for Christmas this year. I am sitting right next to her as we speak. We are all ridiculously excited that she is home. We've been shopping and laughing, and having great fun since she's gotten home. We have amazing plans to get her to stay in the U.S. --

1. Steal her passport (Mrs. Denny gets credit for that one)

. . . that is the only one we have right now.

It's a work in progress.

Britt and Nate

Visiting Grandpa Bob and Grandma Sally

So this year Brittany gave birth to triplets. Just kidding.

This year Britt and Nate left their little ol' apartment in Martinez, and found a beautiful new place closer to the City. They moved for the school district, so Liv could go to one of the best public school systems in the state (go Britt and Nate!). They love their new place, and the kids love having neighbors to play with and more room to run around in.

Nate is still at the same job, and I still have no idea what it is that he does. All I know is that I talk to him a lot while he is at work, so it can't be anything that important (that my friends is called tattling).

Britt has her hands more full than EVER. She is still teaching piano, which keeps her busy. Oh, and the fact that she has a six, a three, and a two year-old has something to do with it, too.

Liv is in 1st grade, and is turning into a beautiful young lady. I freak out every time I see her because it seems like she is getting taller and more mature by the second. She loves animals, and is a great reader.

Mel is . . .  Mel. That is the best way to describe her. She is insane. Her daily routine involves talking to herself, drinking children's Tylenol, serving some to her little brother, and being rushed to the Emergency Room. All in a days work when you are three.

Will is an excited little fellow, I'll tell you that much. He turned two this year, and is SUCH a little man. His one downfall is that he likes to scream a lot, but at least it's a happy scream. Then again, your ear drums don't care if it's a happy scream or an angry scream, you'll still go deaf.

The other big thing for their family is that they are now going to church in Berkeley, which they love. We miss seeing them every Sunday, but they are really enjoying where they are attending now.

Mom

This year my mom turned the big 30+20. We spent the weekend in Tahoe to celebrate. It was a great time. My mom wanted us all to go cross-country skiing (I know, that's what I said) but that didn't fly so we pretty much sled down hills all day. My mom said that instead of making her feel accomplished by cross-country skiing, she felt like a kid again sledding. Which, when I'm 30+20, I'd much rather feel like a kid than accomplished. I mean, really. Other than that she stayed at home taking care of us and teaching Maddy school. She's still directing the church nursery.  She also realized that she has spent every one of her 51 Thanksgivings with her parents, 20 of those were with me (which, those were probably the best ones. . I'm just guessing)

Dad

My dad had a really boring year. There are only so many times I can say things like, "he worked so we could have food". So let's see, the biggest event in my dad's life this year was the purchase of the new fridge. We are one of those families who don't believe in buying new appliances until it is absolutely necessary, so this was a really big deal. He researched and visited the store a lot, well, as much as you can in three days (the fridge was absolutely necessary). However, the biggest perk from this purchase was that he won't have to sleep on the couch until the next appliance breaks down! A high tech family is a happy family. Oh, and he also became a Hell's Angel back in the spring.

Just kidding.

Thanks for reading through all of this. You're amazing.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and a very happy New Year!
